Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble Album Release Party Feb. 28

By Kenneth Eaton

The Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble will be hosting an album release party for their latest work, P.D.P. (President Dey Pass), on February 28th at S.O.B.’s in New York City. The night will undoubtedly test the dance floor as DJ Rich Medina, Cedric "Im" Brooks of The Skatalites, Amayo and other members of Antibalas and the Budos Band share the stage.

This will be a special night for the New York Afrobeat scene. The 14-piece Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble combines the driving arrangements of the iconic bandleader Fela Kuti and Western conceptions of jazz and funk in a blossoming Afrobeat style. Their effective interplay of horns and vocal melodies with a monumental rhythm section brims with style, culture, and life. Under the guidance of bandleader Kaleta, a former percussionist for Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, the Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble provides a snapshot of culture in Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean. Don’t miss out!

Doors open at 7pm. Set times at 9pm and 11pm. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. S.O.B.’s address: 125 5th Avenue 207 Varick Street New York, NY.
